Historical Research

Archival research conducted under the direction of Dr. Jimena Lobo Guerrero has been a significantly time-consuming and yet greatly rewarding component of this project. Rather than concentrating on larger, public repositories of historical documents such as the National Archive and the National Library of Colombia, we focused our search on the smaller, highly restricted archival collection at the Bogotá Cathedral where we were able to locate the death and burial records of San Ignacio. These books contain information about close to 600 laypeople who were buried in the Jesuit church between 1742 and 1805, including a majority of white and presumably mestizo women, men, and children, but also indigenous people, and enslaved individuals of African origin. This rich historical source has never been reported before, and will be crucial for the interpretation of the burials we excavated in different areas of the nave and atrium of San Ignacio. For the historical analysis of the clergymen burials concentrated in the presbytery area of the church, we can now refer to the another unreported source we located at the Historical Archive of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in an extraordinary turn of luck – the private administrative records of San Ignacio. These contain detailed information about all priests and high-status civilians inhumed in prime areas of the church between the second half of the 17th century and the early 1800s, including, among others specific data about the liturgical vestments members of the Jesuit community were buried in.

La investigación de archivo llevada a cabo bajo la dirección de la Dra. Jimena Lobo Guerrero ha sido un componente importante y muy gratificante de este proyecto. En lugar de concentrar nuestro estudio en grandes repositorios de documentos históricos, como el Archivo General de la Nación y la Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia, nos enfocamos en los archivos históricos de la Catedral Primada de Bogotá, donde pudimos localizar los registros de defunciones y entierros de San Ignacio. Estos libros contienen información sobre cerca de 600 laicos que fueron enterrados en la iglesia entre 1742 y 1805, incluyendo mujeres, hombres y niños blancos y presumiblemente mestizos, pero también indígenas y personas esclavizadas de origen africano. Esta rica fuente histórica nunca ha sido investigada antes, y será crucial para la interpretación de los enterramientos que excavamos en diferentes áreas de la nave y el atrio de San Ignacio. Para el análisis histórico de los enterramientos de clérigos concentrados en el área del presbiterio de la iglesia, nos basamos en los libros de sacristía de San Ignacio, otro acervo documental poco conocido, que localizamos en el Archivo Histórico de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Estos libros contienen información detallada sobre todos los sacerdotes y civiles de alto rango inhumados en zonas privilegiadas de la iglesia entre la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y principios del siglo XIX, incluyendo, entre otros, datos específicos sobre los ornamentos litúrgicos con los que fueron enterrados los miembros de la comunidad jesuita.
