Proyecto Arqueológico Iglesia de San Ignacio
The San Ignacio Church Archaeological Project aims at uncovering the historical and cultural heritage of the mother church of the Jesuit order in present-day Colombia. Built between 1610 and 1694, San Ignacio is one of the oldest and most emblematic churches in the historical district of Bogotá. It played a central role in the spiritual and artistic life of colonial Santafé and, nowadays, continues to be recognized as a major landmark in Bogotá’s cultural landscape.
Our team of archaeologists, historians, and conservators is committed to shed light on many long-forgotten aspects of both San Ignacio’s and Bogotá’s past. Evidence supporting this fascinating journey comes directly from the church’s ancient foundations, which we excavated and examined as the building was undergoing an integral restoration process, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia and the local chapter of the Society of Jesus. Our project draws on archaeological, bioarchaeological and historical data to address the social, political, and religious history of the church, as well as the social lives of all those who cherished it as a place of worship and eventually chose it as their final resting place. In doing so, we seek to foster knowledge and appreciation of Bogotá’s rich historical and archaeological heritage, and to explore multiple and innovative resources to make this knowledge relevant to the general public in Colombia and elsewhere in the world.

El Proyecto Arqueológico Iglesia de San Ignacio tiene como objetivo dar a conocer el patrimonio histórico y cultural de la Iglesia de San Ignacio, uno de los monumentos religiosos más antiguos y emblemáticos de Bogotá, Colombia. La iglesia, construida entre 1610 y 1694, ha jugado un papel fundamental en la vida espiritual y artística de la ciudad desde tiempos coloniales y continúa siendo un referente cultural de primera importancia en el centro histórico de la capital.
Desde 2016, nuestro equipo de arqueólogos, historiadores y conservadores se ha esforzado por descubrir y documentar aspectos ocultos tanto de este edificio como de la antigua ciudad de Santafé. Este nuevo conocimiento se nutre de la evidencia material proveniente de las excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas durante la última fase de un proceso de restauración integral del inmueble, financiado por el Ministerio de Cultura de la República de Colombia y el capítulo local de la Compañía de Jesús. Así, este proyecto se esmera por generar e interpretar datos arqueológicos, bioarqueológicos e históricos con el fin de reconstruir la vida social tanto de la Iglesia de San Ignacio como de quienes la utilizaron como lugar de culto o sitio de reposo eterno. Estamos, por tanto, comprometidos a fomentar el conocimiento y valoración del patrimonio cultural colombiano, y promover la conservación y el respeto del público general por el registro arqueológico de Bogotá.
